Sypnosis:

Set in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s Luca is a coming-of-age story about a young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer. Luca shares his amazing adventures with his friend Alberto, but their fun is threatened by a deeply held secret: they’re sea monsters from a world below the water’s surface.

Luca takes place at the Italian seaside but begins under the sea. Luca who usually follows his parents’ rules not to go near the dangerous surface still daydreams and is curious about the human world. He meets a boy, Alberto who frequents the shore, and soon discovers that when dry they transform from sea creatures to humans. Luca and Alberto become friends and share dreams and plans that involve riding a Vespa scooter all over the Earth. When Luca’s family discovers that Luca has been above water, they call on his Uncle Ugo to take him to live with him at the depths of the ocean for a season. As a result, Luca runs away. Joined by Alberto they venture to the nearest human town, Porto Rosso, where they quickly get into trouble with the town bully, Ercule. Luckily, they get saved by a friend to the underdogs, Giulia. She informs them about the town’s annual race: a triathlon involving swimming, cycling, and eating pasta that can ultimately get them closer to fulfilling their dream of buying a Vespa. The boys team up with Giulia, who has come in second several years in a row to Ercule. They move in with her, her father and his cat which hilariously looks just like him, down to the mustache. They advise her fisherman father on where to catch loads of fish and he takes a liking to them. They enjoy his delicious pasta meals and hospitality while they train for the race. Eventually, Luca’s parents come to live amongst humans too while they search for their son. Luca spots them a couple times but isn’t ready to give up on his dream. Through Giulia, he starts to read books and learn all about the world above the ocean and loves it. Alberto seems to be bothered by Luca’s interest in learning and wish to go to school with Giulia. After doing everything possible to keep dry and avoid being discovered as “sea-monsters” Alberto reveals himself to Giulia. Out of fear of losing his new found life and friend, Luca yells and points at Alberto calling him a sea monster. The look of disappointment in Alberto’s face was overwhelming as he swam away while having spears thrown at him by Ercule and his sidekicks. The town offers a reward for catching those so-called sea monsters. More determined than ever, Luca competes on his own in the race.

Per usual I will leave the ending up to you to watch, but I will tell you some of my favorite things about the film.

The film is a heartfelt and beautifully animated adventure that brought a nostalgic feeling with a theme reminiscent of The Little Mermaid. But it also added a powerful message necessary in today’s climate, which was a message of acceptance.

It was also heart warming to see a single father cooking delicious meals for his daughter and cheering her on in the race. I don’t think we see that enough.

What I also really love about this film was all the Italian language that the characters spoke. That made the characters seem more authentic and intrigued my kids. Both my boys kept repeating words and phrases which was great to see and hear.

I loved that the movie ended, and my heart felt happy. I can keep watching this movie over and over, but I must warn you- you will probably crave a bowl of pasta and want to book your next vacation to Italy asap!
