Film Synopsis
The Eyes of Tammy Faye is an intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker (Jessica Chastain). In the 1970s and ’80s, Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker (Andrew Garfield) built a burgeoning religious broadcasting network and theme park – until rivals, financial wrongdoing and scandal toppled their empire.
I must admit that I had not heard of Tammy Faye or her husband before watching this film, but the story did interest me. After watching it, I did some research and watched videos of the real Tammy Faye and I was amazed at how much Jessica Chastain captured her likeness. I still can not get over the transformation that Jessica went through. The story told about Tammy’s life was quite sad. Tammy seemed to be a very damaged child who was in desperate need of love. She quickly found it in the wrong person. She married a very flawed Jim Baker who falls into temptation more then he lets on. They join together to form a travelling ministry which turns into a phenomenon. Coming from humble beginnings, Tammy seems to indulge in the finer things in life and turns a blind eye in the mismanaging of money from her husband. Jim’s mismanagement soon turns into him cheating, deceiving, and more from their devoted parishioners. Tammy has millions of followers based on her ability to separate religion from state and not get involved in the politics, but instead focuses on humanity. Her husband counts on her innocence and pure intentions to get away with his sinful behavior, but of course it catches up to him and causes their downfall. It was sad to see how Tammy’s story turned out but of course teaches lessons along the way. For me, it further acknowledged what I already felt about how extreme religious folks cause so much harm and prey upon those who follow blindly. I really felt for Tammy and how she desperately tried to win her mothers approval and how despite her pure intentions, did not end up the hero. See below for the trailer and bonus features.
