Free Guy

Film Synopsis
A bank teller (Ryan Reynolds) who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world
video game decides to become the hero of his own story – one he rewrites himself. Now, in a world
where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way … before it’s
too late.

I have to be honest, I was a little skeptical about this film. I did not really understand the premise which did not make me as excited to watch it. Fortunately, my twelve year old son was out of control anxious and excited to watch it. All of his favorite YouTubers had cameos and he wanted to see it all and I love Ryan Reynolds, so it was an easy decision. Interestingly enough, the story was really cool. At first it reminded me of The Truman Show and The Lego Movie. Guy was this extremely positive dude that happily repeated his beloved routine and was not aware that he was not real, but a secondary character in a video game. One day he sees a girl and everything changes, of course. So that is when the real story comes in to play and it was quite interesting. This film brings the suspense of artificial intelligence developing out of our control all the while depicting a very real scenario of ideas being stolen and covered up for financial gain. I love the conversations that it brought up with my son and how it showed the reality of what happens in these popular video games. My nine year old had to sit this one out, but I did enjoy watching this with our twelve year old. It had some curse words, but nothing that he had not heard before. I have been trying to introduce him to more films like this and I think it was the perfect fit. He is at the age now, where I feel like he can start watching “real” movies now. I must admit that I always struggle because most of the movies that I do want him to watch have sexual content that I am not ok with yet for his age, so this was perfect. One of his favorite scenes was the fight scene at the end with Dude, so it was really cool to watch these extended scenes. Look below for more bonus features and trailer.
